WhatsApp is broadening its digital payment offerings by introducing a feature that allows users to pay utility bills directly through its messaging platform. This new capability lets users handle everyday expenses such as electricity, gas, water, and more without leaving the app.
The service is integrated with the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, supporting over 22,700 billers across 30 different categories. These categories include, but are not limited to, FASTag, insurance, credit card payments, and loan repayments, providing a comprehensive solution for managing various financial obligations.
Accessing the bill payment feature is straightforward. Users can select the desired bill category and provider from the WhatsApp home screen, enter their account information, and review the total amount due before proceeding with the payment. The platform offers flexibility with multiple payment methods available, such as UPI, debit cards, and credit cards.
In addition to making payments, users can track previous transactions, monitor upcoming bills, and manage multiple accounts associated with the same service provider. This functionality aims to streamline the process of handling financial tasks by minimizing the need to switch between different applications.
WhatsApp’s expansion into bill payments underscores its ambition to become a more comprehensive digital-services platform. This move reflects the broader trend of integrating digital financial services into messaging apps, as tech companies strive to provide seamless payment solutions and routine transaction handling within their existing ecosystems.
