Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest aviation hub, with passenger numbers for July showing a marked difference. Istanbul Airport served 8.15 million travelers during the month, outpacing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This shift in rankings reflects a 2.3% increase in traffic at Istanbul, in contrast to a 1.5% decline at Heathrow compared to July of the previous year.
The recent data puts pressure on the UK government to make decisions regarding Heathrow’s proposed third runway, a £33 billion project aimed at boosting the airport’s capacity. Currently operating at near full capacity with two runways, Heathrow seeks to expand its annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers to enhance the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism.
Heathrow attributes its dip in passenger numbers partly to disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The airport argues that these figures underscore the urgent need for additional capacity to maintain its competitive edge in the European aviation market.
Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a more extensive site and a 24/7 operational schedule. It currently operates three runways, with plans to introduce a fourth by the end of 2026, further solidifying its position as a major global hub.
In contrast, other UK airports such as London Stansted and Manchester recorded their busiest July ever, with 3.1 million and 3.4 million passengers respectively. These figures highlight a growing demand for air travel within the UK despite Heathrow’s recent decline in passenger numbers.
